Jot Magazine Issue 11 - part 1

Earlier in the month the latest issue of Jot Magazine was released and I just realised I've been a little remiss in sharing my layouts with you here on the blog. Sorry!

Jot Magazine is a free online publication that's dedicated to story telling and memory keeping. As a Jot Girl I have the honour of making projects for the specific galleries ahead of time. It's a bumper issue this time around with over 190 pages of inspiration and I've got so many layouts and cards in it that I thought I should break it up over two separate posts for you ;-)

The first gallery I quickly signed up for was the 'my favourite photo' gallery. I mean, how easy to scrap your most recent favourite photo?! As you can imagine, the hard bit was trying to narrow down what photo I wanted to scrap, but after I chose this one it came together quickly.

It's a hybrid layout and I used a digital template that Shanna Noel designed for Studio Calico last year (no longer available sorry) to cut out the different sections on my Silhouette.

The photo makes me giggle because in my mind Judah and his bear seem to have the exact same expression on their face! I enlarged the photo, converted it to black and white and printed it directly onto textured cardstock which gives it a rather interesting worn look.

Next up we have the card I made for the Mixed Media gallery.

To be honest it's been a little while since I got my mixed media supplies out since I've been sticking to cleaner Project Life spreads recently. But it was good to get a little messy again and spread some texture paste through a stencil. I have learned though that even if I'm using 'arty' techniques I still like to have my paper layers in straight lines so it doesn't feel too out of control for my taste ;-)

I'm really loving these colours too - feels very springy!

And my last share for today is this layout I made for the Type gallery. The idea was to include elements like typewriters, typed text etc etc.

My starting point was this old October Afternoon paper with the ladies sitting at their desk typing away. After watching lots of Mad Men recently it made me think of how far the concept of a 'career woman' has come since these days, and that got me thinking about my own personal struggle of trying to balance my career with my family.

As you can see, I had quite a bit to say on the matter! It seemed apt that I present it as though they are typed notes - plus the small font allowed me to say even more. Ha!

I'll be back to share the rest of my projects real soon. But in the meantime you can download the latest copy of the FREE Jot Magazine here.

The Story of My Journaling Bible

Once again I'm here to confess to my slight Instagram addiction. I'm feel like it's so easy and immediate that I'm posting on there all the time, and it seems to give me the impression I'm up to date! Then I realise my poor old blog gets a little bit more neglected each time, so I thought it was time for a bit of a catch up :-)

For those of you who follow me on Instagram you would have noticed that over the past few weeks I've 'discovered' the world of bible journaling and it's quickly become a main staple in my creative ventures. It's not necessarily a daily routine, but perhaps every second or third day I start out my morning looking something like this : breakfast, coffee, journaling bible, Handbook full of stamps, printables and some old Studio Calico kits.

I don't think there's any right or wrong way to do this, and I'm certainly still feeling my way along and working out my style. Not that I think you have to have a style either! I see it as very similar to art journaling in a regular journal. Sometimes you want to test out different mediums, try a specific supply, work in a certain genre. Sometimes you want lots of words, other times it's visual impact you're going for.

What I do know is that since I started it's been like a lightbulb moment when it's finally dawned on me that the creative talents He has blessed me with, and the desire to get more involved in the Word could be combined into this one glorious outlet. Now one craving drives the other, instead of my previous impression that they were competing interests.

I really can't credit anyone else more highly than Shanna Noel for inspiring me to begin this journey. I've been following her on Instagram for the longest time (I'm certain I was following her there even long before we were both on the Studio Calico Creative Team together last year) and that's because she's one of the most genuine people 'I know', and because her scrapbooking style is out of this world!! So when she started what she called "Illustrated Faith" slowly but surely last year I watched eagerly to see where this was going. She just launched her website last week (?) and I've been devouring it ever since. It's definitely the place to go for bible journaling inspiration!

Anyway, so that's just one thing I've been up to lately, and I felt it was worthy of blog-post status! ;-) Here's some other things that have happened recently too:

Penny Arcade Reveal

Reveal time!! YAY!

The July Studio Calico kits are called Penny Arcade and are filled with warm colours, feather and star patterns (both are my favourites!) and cute embellishments. Here's a look at the main Scrapbook Kit:

But in order to get a much closer 'real life' look at the kit contents, plus the contents of the 3 Add On Kits you can check them out in my video here:

I say 'my video', but really.... yes, it's the Trophy Husband's video! You asked for it, and you got it!! I have to say for the first time ever he was more excited about my SC kits arriving than I was! I tell you, he had those kits unpacked and the video made before I even came home from work. I didn't even get a chance to open them myself ;-)

Now let me show you the projects I've made with them. The first layout is made with the Main Kit Only and is called "Best Ever" and was inspired by the combination of map paper and the fabulous brushscript paper filled with locations around the world. We're not a family that does a lot of travel, and certainly not international travel, but I was excited to see Sydney make the list because I just so happened to have some recent photos to scrap!

I stuck with quite a bold blue, red and yellow combination for this page with all those graphic patterns. Which is why my second Main Kit Only layout is hard to believe it's from the same kit... because it's almost like the exact opposite!

For "Z & M" I concentrated on all the fabulous Ashley Goldberg designed products. That includes the watercolour background paper, the feather papers (two papers... in two different colour combinations!), the stamp and the cloud stencil. These are quite unique and I love the soft artsy appeal of these. I really appreciate how Studio Calico showcases new artists each time and includes lots of exclusive products. It means my pages look different each time I scrap.

Now let me share some Add On love with you. This one is called 'Fortune Teller' and perhaps appeals more to the masculine scrapper. But it's also really easy to get a girly look with this too, and I must admit that I'm hoarding all those star bits!

You probably wouldn't automatically pick that my layout "Click" is made with Fortune Teller would you? The yellow polka dots is the b-side to the blue bokeh paper, and I've included some Printables too. But the main feature of this page is of course those flowers!

I used the Flower Cutting File designed by Kim Stewart, and instead of cutting them out I actually used my Sketch Pens to draw it straight onto the paper instead. I've got quite the crush on my Sketch Pens at the moment. You may have noticed? ;-)

In true Kim Stewart style I then used waterpaints (really... I used Mister Huey's!) to paint in the design and sprinkle it with glitter too. That woman inspires me so much!

My personal favourite Add On is called 'Spun Sugar' and it's the embellishment-only kit for the month. Every single bit of this kit is perfection!

Now obviously the embellishment-only kit doesn't come with any papers, and whilst pondering what I would pair these pieces with I decided against using the papers from the other kits (although they would coordinate perfectly... that's half the point!) and used some kid-art instead.

The design of this page is such that the photos are attached to the vellum overlay (yes I went absolutely crazy with the vellum this month... it's on pretty much every layout I made!) which then folds down to reveal the black and white painting underneath. The painting in turn also folds down and reveals the purple paper artwork underneath that too! So there's three layers on this page and it showcases two pieces of art from my 4 year old.

The last Add On is called 'Skeeball' and is filled with lots of my favourites too. More stars! Sunbeams! A pink, yellow and blue combination! I admit, this was a close call to being my favourite as well.

I used bits and pieces of it as my 'real' products in making this hybrid layout.

But the real highlight of this page is the extraordinary Digital Template that Shanna Noel has designed again. My goodness I love that lady's talent!! Most of the work on this page is done through Photoshop, and when I say 'work' I mean I just added a photo and some journaling! Not hard at all. This was the quickest page I made this month by a long shot!

But I can't help but still want to add dimensional pieces, even if they're just simple little bits like this badge and metal circle combination. And yes, it's bugging me that the metal circle flipped over backwards when I photographed it without me noticing. Never mind.

You can see more of the details behind my layouts in my gallery, and all the products I've used are linked below. Happy Reveal Day everyone!

PS. I've also added this and this to my cart since we last spoke :-)
