The Story of the Birthing Classes

Recently I've seen a lot of layouts that feature a transparent or vellum pocket filled with confetti. What a great idea for an embellishment! You know I'm always up for quirky embellishments. But what I especially love is the confetti being able to move around inside it's pocket which adds a whole new element to our design. Now we've not only got colour, dimension and texture but movement on our pages!!

But I'm not here today to show you how to add confetti pockets to your page ;-) Today I wanted to take that idea of movement even one step further and even add the element of sound! My idea was to include a type of shaker box onto my page (or even more than one as the case might be!) I used some recycled packaging from a packet of brads and filled the little containers with beads. How fun right?

Now let me tell you ..... having an idea is one thing. Making it happen on your first attempt when a video is rolling is quite another ordeal! Things don't always go smoothly! But I didn't want to edit this video and cut out all the mistakes because I wanted to show you exactly what my process was, how I fixed the the errors and basically just to show you that this is real life :-)

Did you notice all the journaling I added to this page? LOL! That's because I had a great story to tell. My friend and I have been talking for a while about running some Birthing Classes for the girls at church (we seem to be in the midst of a baby-boom!!). She's not medical at all, but she's had great birth experiences with both her girls and she's keen to impart what she's learnt and to help others have a similar experience. In turn I shared what I've been observing with the women in labour that I deal with practically everyday. It seems obvious to me that those women who are stressed, fearful and anxious about labour have a MUCH worse time than those who are relaxed and in control.

So we came up with a plan and a curriculum which is aimed at giving women the knowledge they need to know what to expect in labour and how to remain calm. We've actually just finished our first set of classes with our first cohort of three couples and they were pretty well received. The first baby will be due in a few weeks time, so we'll wait to see what the final word may be!

All of my supplies for this page came from my DT package from Scrap Friends, except for those fabulous flourishes which are of course from Flourish With a Bling. And guess what? Scrap Friends is about to celebrate our First Birthday with a giant sale. Time to go shopping girls!

The Story of an Ambassador

Many of you may have seen this announcement already. Certainly I've been shouting it from the rooftops! But I'm very pleased to say that I've been invited to be a part of the wonderful new team of Jenni Bowlin Studios Ambassadors!!
I've really enjoyed working alongside Jenni and her team in the past, and that's not only because they're great people but because I genuinely love their product too. So I've got plenty of older layouts that are full of JBS products. But I made a new layout for the call which I wanted to share with you.

It's all about the day Munchy was awarded the "Lynbrook Legend Award" which is a prize awarded at her school every month to a student who demonstrates teamwork, respect, excellence, caring and responsibility. We were proud as punch when she brought home the announcement and I knew straight away that was a piece of paper I was going to have to include on a layout ;-) Remember when scrapbooking used to just be about gluing your achievements and memories into a book? Well it's much more fun now... but sometimes I think we need to get back to our roots too.

The way I see it - Jenni Bowlin Studio is all about celebrating vintage emphemera and the icons of yesteryear. Her images evoke feelings of "the good-ol' days" and are reminiscant of "the way things used to be" as we think of the era that maybe our parents or grandparents grew up in. But lets not forget that the bits and pieces of our ordinary lives right now are going to evoke those same emotions in our children in times to come. So I'm all about including the "real" in my layouts.

And in this instance it also included that fact that I have no other photo of the award ceremony than the one my husband took on his phone of the back of someone else's camera!! (He forgot to take a camera of his own)...... Now that's real!! LOL!

I couldn't be happier to be joining this group of talented women of Ambassadors, many of whom have been long-time scrappy crushes of mine. I just know that they're going to bring you bunches of inspiration over the next year, and I count myself very lucky to be among them.

The Story of a Techno-Savvy Toddler

It's a sign of the times isn't it? My 2-year-old can work her way around an iPad better than I can. She knows how to dial numbers on my iPhone (which she's now learned NOT to do after ringing a few random people at the top of my contact list!) and she can turn on a DVD faster than a speeding bullet.

And maybe it's because she's grown up in that culture, or maybe it's because her IT-loving father keeps wanting to buy every new gadget that Apple produce, but Moodles has got a real knack for technology.

If it's got buttons she wants to press them, if it's knobs then they must be twiddled! If it looks like a phone then she will pick it up and try and speak into it. But I think it's also something about her in particular that makes her mind tick over that way. I think she's got a bit of an engineering-type brain.

For example (and this is the story I've told on this layout) is what happened when my mother-in-law was babysitting for us one night. She said she gave each of the girls a piece of foam to cut into and get creative with. When she asked Munchy what she was making she said a chair for her doll's house....... well that makes sense.

But Moodle's answer was interesting and quite revealing about the way her mind thinks. She said "I'm making a trap so I can catch an elephant"!!

Hhhmmmm...... good luck I say :-)
