The Story of Masters

I realise I haven't talked a whole lot about Masters here on my blog. I talked about it a lot as I was applying, I showed you lots of sneaks along the way, and lots of attempts at the criteria that I never ended up submitting. But I haven't discussed much about what it's been like actually being named as a Scrapbooking Memories Master for 2014, nor shown you any of the projects I've created along the way. So let me share a little bit about it now :-)

It is a topical discussion at the moment for a couple of reasons. For all 10 of us current Masters we're mourning the fact that our last assignment has been turned in and despite the fact that last project won't get published until December, it feels like it's essentially over for us already :-( But what that also means is that the new Masters have just been decided on and the phone calls have been made. There's 10 more excited people out there who have to bite their tongue and keep silent until it gets officially announced in another couple of months.

As Masters we are supplied with a package of one of the sponsors products every month. We're given an assignment which ranges from layouts to cards to journals to decorative items and we need to showcase as much of the product as possible. Here on this first layout I'm using a bunch of Flourish With a Bling stickers, and as this is a previous DT of mine I found it a nice and easy assignment ;-)

Sometimes, of course, the assignments don't come that easy. For example, I love October Afternoon as a manufacturer - as a whole I really enjoy using their products, and I was really excited that they were one of the sponsors. The prize we received from them was really generous and I'm so grateful to them.

But for our published project we were supplied with a selection of products from their Travel Girl collection and asked to make a double-page layout. The reason that was difficult for me is that I don't have a whole lot of travel photos. It's not one of the topics I scrap about to be honest, and this particular collection wasn't one I was mad crazy about.

So instead of scrapping some old travel photos from a previous trip that I've already scrapped before I decided to print off some stock photos from Google (copyright free of course!) and used them to tell a story of places I'd like to visit - obviously Japan was the destination I chose for this layout. Not a bad solution if I do say so myself, but I'm not sure that this will ever be an treasured layout to me.

Basic Grey were another sponsor, and they provided the Masters with all sorts of different new collections. Only 2 or 3 of us scrapped with the same collection, which made for a varied and interesting article in the magazine. I received the Kelly Purkey designed collection 'Mon Ami' which again is travel (and food) focused, and I wondered if I would again struggle.

But what I love most about these assignments is the challenge of taking some products that I might not ever choose for myself, or a theme that I've decided isn't 'mine' and then try and make it into something that represents me and stays true to my style as much as possible. I think I accomplished that with this Basic Grey layout, and I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

Part of the trick for me was to stick with some tried and true techniques and layout designs, and adapt them to the products I'm working with. As you might have noticed, this layout follows pretty much the same 'sketch' as the first layout. Photo on the left, matching sized embellishment cluster next to it, other bits and pieces leading out from all four directions. This is a design I've used many times before, but I just find that it works for me.

Lastly for today I'll share a layout I made with Manor House Collections. At the time they had just released their very first paper line, but they are best known for their flowers, and whilst all 10 Masters received the same papers, we each got different coloured combinations of flowers which meant our layouts still all looked quite different.

The papers are quite neutral so I concentrated on adding the colour in two clusters of flowers. I wanted to give the illusion the page was divided into two, so I kept all the pink flowers on top, and the turquoise ones on the bottom. It's an interesting effect I think, and once again the design is something I've used before so I think this page still looks like me, even if flowers aren't something I commonly use.

I did augment them a little bit with the addition of gesso and spray inks. That's another important aspect of the challenges I think, customising the products and making them your own so that it showcases the versatility of each one.

Well I've got lots more Masters projects to share as the time goes on. Part of the deal is we can't publish our projects for a defined amount of time after the project gets released in the magazine, so all of these ones I've shared today were published much earlier in the year. There's lots more exciting projects to come and I'd encourage you to check them out in the latest editions of Scrapbooking Memories which is now also available online if you're that way inclined ;-)

Studio Calico CHA Online Crop Extravaganza

I tell you one thing that's true... there's no-one else that throws an online event like Studio Calico! While the head-honchos are off at CHA we're having a bit of a celebration on the boards and blog. For a start we've got challenges that go up every 2 hours and I got to host one of them. Here's the layout I made for it...

It's a simple challenge to make a layout based on this sketch below..

I love that this sketch is built upon a block design which allows you so much creative freedom to fill each of the 4 quadrants with pretty much anything you like. It's a great opportunity to show off some of your favourite patterned papers, such as the October Afternoon woodgrain paper from the Copper Mountain main kit, and the Basic Grey birds from Fremont Glades.Well, they were my choices anyway!

Another option for filling a quadrant is to cluster some embellishments such as I've done here (love those Chic Tags Happy Place Clips from Fremont Glades), or do a whole lot of journaling.

My layout tells the story of my daughter's school-time activities. It seems she might want to follow in my footsteps after all, as she's been telling her friends at school she's knows how to be a doctor and pretends to perform surgery on them at lunch break! She's always claimed she never wanted anything to do with medicine.... but perhaps not hey?! At the very least it's a lovely form of flattery from my 7 year old :-)

All 10 challenges have now gone live. There's challenges to suit scrapbookers, cardmakers and project-lifers alike. And there's plenty of time left to enter as we're keeping it open until the 16th. Every entry that's posted in the gallery or on Instagram with the hashtag #SCCROP2014 goes in the draw to win a 3 month Studio Calico subscription!!! Here's a link to the main post with all the challenge details.

Studio Calico Copper Mountain Reveal

I have to admit I'm still more than a little nervous as I type this out which is a little weird for me. Weird because I've been scrapping with Studio Calico kits for years and never felt scared before. Nervous because now I'm scrapping for Studio Calico and I really hope that you find my layouts inspiring enough and that I can do these kits justice. Anyway... let's get on with the show!!

The main scrapbooking kit for January 2014 is called "Copper Mountain" and takes its inspiration from a ski resort. Think bold primary colours and lots of woodgrain! Great for scrapping masculine pages and winter photos of course.... but that's not what I did ;-)

For my first "Main Kit only" layout I knew I had to use that exclusive wood veneer matrix - it adds a unique and textural layer to my stack of papers and gives you lots of opportunities to fill it with little embellishments, or stamped images like me.

This layout tells the story of my daughter's first haircut (yes, when she was 3...... rack that one up to lazy parents hey?!) and because I like to include memorabilia on my pages I've kept some of her trimmed locks, encased them in some of the product packaging and sewn them directly onto my page.

The feature of my second "Main Kit only" page is the paper from Basic Grey.. I cut out some of the triangles randomly and used foam adhesive to lift it from the background. Creates a little bit of interest, and draws together the other colours from the page.

But really it was the story in my head that actually inspired this page. I've had many a James Bond joke thrown at me over the years. Believe it or not my Dad's name actually IS James Bond, and obviously Bond was also my maiden name. Growing up I had to hear those classic lines quoted at me time after time. But the other weird connection is when a college friend decided that the celebrity I most closely resemble is Dame Judy Dench (??!!) and he called me "M" forever after. Just a funny little story I wanted to preserve and this recent martini shot offered me the perfect opportunity.

After I was done with my Main Kit layouts I knew I needed to dive into each one of the Add On Kits in turn. Each is fabulous and I still have trouble deciding which one is my favourite. Certainly I can tell you what my favourite bits are from each though. For Add On 1: Fremont Glades I am loving those gold alphas and the chevron paper (both from We R Memory Keepers). And lets not forget those fabulous kraft lightbulbs from Maya Road!

Who would have thought a few years ago how dramatically Pinterest would change our lives? This page tells the story of the day I was looking for ideas of how to treat two good little girls on a rainy day. 5 minutes on Pinterest, 10 minutes in the kitchen and.... hello Rainbow Pancakes! Awesome right?

Add On 2: High Point has a school theme which is just perfect for right now. I've got plenty of stories of end-of-year achievements and commencing new-year activities. The exclusive grey diecut shapes (oh that globe!!) and the veneer circles stole my heart.

Again, wanting to incorporate the important memorabilia I've actually included the entirety of my daughters 4 page school report on this page. Can't see it? That's because it's hidden inside a mini-book behind the photo. You can view it all in my Studio Calico gallery.. or perhaps I'll do another blog post devoted to this later on in the month?

My final layout was created with Add On 3: Slingshot filled with golds and greys and those adorable cork stickers. But my favourite bit was the white canvas Prima alphabet because honestly the possibilities are endless with these. Paint them or ink them to whatever colour you need. Here I coloured just the bottom half blue which I think gives them a fun and whimsical feel.

The story here is one of my youngest going off to Kindergarten this year. That's going to leave the house awfully quiet during the day - I wonder how my husband is going to fill his hours now? Hopefully productively in the garden I imagine. And I just know my daughter is going to thrive with the extra activities and stimulus. I predict she's going to take after her sister in her thirst for knowledge.

Anyway. That's all for now. Thanks for sharing this long journey with me. I'm going to have plenty more layouts throughout the month to share because I just can't get enough of these kits, and I sure do have plenty of fabulous pieces still to use!
